Repetitive stress injuries encompass a large group of injuries that may affect either soft tissues or bones.

The most common populations that suffer from these injuries include distance runners (track and cross country), young military recruits, dancers, and gymnasts. The very repetitive nature of these activities coupled with participation in many months of the calendar year may elevate an athlete’s risk profile.

In general, repetitive stress injury treatment includes activity modification (partial reduction or full discontinuation) along with symptom management. Physical therapy is usually indicated to help the athlete work back into the sport safely and effectively.
