Back pain is one of the most common injuries we treat. Our therapists utilize simple, effective treatment techniques to help patients feel  and move better. We de-emphasize treatments that are overly complex, ineffective, or passive and emphasize techniques that the patient can reproduce at home with minimal equipment, thereby fostering independence and autonomy.

We discuss the relevant science and evidence-based approaches so that each patient and his or her family can understand the “why” behind this condition. We achieve our goals using an eclectic approach, emphasizing strengthening, stretching, general physical conditioning, and repeated movements using the McKenzie Method framework.

The McKenzie Method

There are many schools of thought regarding the treatment of back pain. The McKenzie Method is a well regarded methodology used frequently at CTPO. The keystone of this system is repeated movements, but your therapist will incorporate traditional strengthening, stretching, motor control drills, education, and progressive loading to provide a well rounded program.

The McKenzie Method encourages patients to treat themselves. This “hands-off” style works well for busy athletes and school aged children. The therapist will give the patient something to work on at home and the patient will practice the movement on a regular basis each day.

The McKenzie Method is contrasted by chiropractic care, where the practitioner is heavily involved in the care and treatment requires frequent, often expensive, in-clinic visits.
